How do I Apply to Medical School?

Applications for Ontario medical schools can be accessed through OMSAS: https://www.ouac.on.ca/omsas/. Each university has different requirements, which you can find on their respective webpages. Highlights from each university are as follows:

Which tests may be required?

What is the CASPer test?

The CASPer test is “an open-response, situational judgment test that evaluates aspects of applicants’ social intelligence and professionalism such as ethics, empathy, problem-solving and collaboration”, used in the admission process for many American and Canadian medical schools. In Ontario, the following universities consider the MCAT in their admissions process: McMaster University, University of Ottawa, and  Queen’s University. How do I study for the CASPer test?

Studying for the CASPer test is generally not needed. However, familiarizing yourself with the test-taking process through the Acuity Insights portal and going through a mock test is recommended.

What is the MCAT?

The Medical College Admissions Test is a standardized test used in the admission process for many American and Canadian medical schools. In Ontario, the following universities consider the MCAT in their admissions process: McMaster University, Queen’s University, University of Toronto, and Western University.

The MCAT is comprised of four sections, which consist of mostly passage-based multiple choice questions. The four sections are:

  • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems

  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills

  • Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems

  • Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behaviour

When should I take the MCAT?

You are welcome to take the MCAT anytime, but it is usually recommended to take it the summer after your second or third year, after completing your core courses. 

How do I study for the MCAT?

There are many approaches to studying for the MCAT, which include using free online resources, paying for a prep course, or using a combination of the two. It is highly recommended to purchase a set of MCAT prep books, either through your prep course, or they can be purchased second hand.
